MBCEA Announces Building of the Year Winners

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - May 20, 2020 - PRLog -- www.mbcea.org - The Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA) announced its 2020 Building of the Year winners this week. Taking the top award is the Air Canada Hangar 5 at Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, Ontario, erected by Scott Steel Erectors Inc. of Hamilton, Ontario. In addition to the overall winner, Awards of Merit and Excellence were announced for buildings in three separate categories: Education and Recreation, Manufacturing and Warehouse, and Specialty Buildings. This year's award winners are being honored at the MBCEA Virtual Conference, which opened May 19th, in the online exhibitor space via the Whova conference app.  All of the award-winning buildings can also be viewed on the MBCEA website at https://www.mbcea.org/awards-recognition/.

Following is a complete list of 2020 MBCEA Building of the Year Award Winners and MBCEA members that worked on the building, as well as the metal building manufacturer/supplier:

Building of the Year: Air Canada Hangar 5, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Scott Steel Erectors Inc. served as the metal building erector on the 175,000 square-foot (sq. ft.) hangar. The building was manufactured by Burnco Mfg., Varco Pruden, and Steelway Building Systems.

Education and Recreation – Award of Merit: Middlebury College's 75 Shannon St. building, Middlebury, VT. Peter Llewellyn of Exeter, NH worked as a consultant on the 22,036 sq. ft. swing-space educational building and for Essex Structural Steel Co, Inc. of Cortland, NY, the metal building supplier.

Education and Recreation – Award of Excellence:  Boston Sports Institute, Wellesley, MA. Barnes buildings & management group, Inc. of Weymouth, MA installed the metal buildings and insulated metal panels on the four-building, 101,842 sq. ft. project. Metallic Building Company, headquartered in Houston, TX, was the metal building manufacturer.

Manufacturing and Warehouse – Award of Merit: Warrior Tractor & Equipment new facility, Graysville, AL. Dunn Building Company of Birmingham, AL was the general contractor and building erector for the 58,100 sq. ft., three-building facility. The metal building manufacturer was MESCO Building Solutions of Irving, TX.

Manufacturing and Warehouse – Award of Excellence: APX Construction Group Office and Warehouse, Mankato, MN. APX Construction Group LLC served as the general contractor for its 13,000 sq. ft. new home, which was manufactured by Metallic Building Company of Houston, TX.

Specialty Buildings – Award of Merit: Southwest Airlines Maintenance Hangar at Hobby Airport, Houston, TX. Sure Steel, Inc., headquartered in South Weber, UT, erected the 246,600 sq. ft. hangar, the largest ever for Southwest. Bluescope Heavy Structures was the metal building manufacturer.

Specialty Buildings – Award of Excellence: Gabrielli Truck Sales office and warehouse, Jamaica, NY. Thomas Phoenix International, Inc, of Eastampton, NJ was the metal building erector for the 63,500 sq. ft. facility. Butler Manufacturing provided the metal building.

"We are very excited to announce this year's Building of the Year winners," says Sasha Demyan, MBCEA Executive Director. "Our members did an excellent job and gave us a number of high-quality buildings from which to choose."

"Typically," she continues, "we would announce the winners in person at the Annual Conference. Given recent events, though, we are pleased to be able to have an online Building of the Year presentation, narrated by Robert Tiffin of Silvercote, available in our Virtual Conference exhibitor space."

Entries are judged by an outside panel of judges based on the following criteria:  Aesthetics, Unusual or Interesting Features, Quality, Complexity, and Green Building Elements. Judges for this year's awards are Ronald Albert, AIA, RHA Architects; Matthew Jarmel, Jarmel Kizel Architects & Engineers; Jerry Gorski, Gorski Engineering.
