Sgt. Ben Jenkins, 47, was fatally shot while assisting a motorist early in the morning on Friday, March 27. The motorist was stopped at US-93 and White Pine County at Mile Marker 106, just outside of Ely.
According to the highway patrol, the motorist is believed to have shot the trooper, then stole his uniform from his body and drove off in the sergeant's cruiser.
The suspect, John Dabritz of White Pine, was later captured and taken into custody.
Sgt. Jenkins, who lived in Elko, joined the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) in 2008. In 2017, he was promoted to Sergeant. He was a veteran of both the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard and served with the Nevada State Fire Marshal Division and with the Nevada Division of Forestry prior to joining NHP.
He is survived by his wife, four children, five grandchildren, and his mother.
Shield Republic's Hold the Line fundraiser for Sgt. Jenkins will include the sale of honorary t-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, hoodies, ladies' tank tops and decals, with 100 percent of net proceeds donated to the Jenkins family.
"We honor the sacrifice of this brave officer and lament his tragic and untimely loss," said Charlie Romero, spokesperson for Shield Republic. "From our team at Shield Republic, we hope our fundraising campaign pays tribute to Sgt. Jenkins as we remember his incredible service and his impact on his community."
