Follow on Google News | All property owners, renters should have flood insuranceBy: CONRIC PR & Marketing Flood insurance isn't just for those living in areas prone to flooding. National statistics show floods are the most common natural disaster worldwide and cause millions of dollars of damage each year in the U.S. About 90% of all presidential disaster declarations are related to flooding. Over the course of a 30-year mortgage, a home or property has a 26% chance of experiencing flooding, compared to 9% for a fire. More than 20% of flood claims come from properties outside high-risk flood zones. Lee County has been especially vulnerable to flooding with 55 flood events reported since 1996. Major storms and hurricanes are a way of life in Florida and having flood insurance offers protection and security. Homeowner's and renter's policies, including those offered by State Farm, typically do not cover damage caused by flooding. But the Sullivans want you to know the National Flood Insurance Program, administered through FEMA, is available for private and public structures. Since you can't purchase flood insurance directly through the government, the Sullivans will work with you, explain your options and help you purchase a plan.
