NEW YORK - Nov. 27, 2019 - PRLog -- ABADÁ-Capoeira Academy NYC hosted its inaugural Batizado or "baptism" at The Riverside Theatre. The ceremony celebrated the art of Capoeira and introduced new students to the Capoeira community in front of a full house with more than 200 guests in attendance.

Under the direction of Professor Gordinho who heads ACA NYC, plenty of capoeira-related activities took place from October 9 to 13, showcasing the plurality of Capoeira. Students and guests were able to experience capoeira as a game, as a fight, as a sport, as history, as dance, as music, and as Brazilian culture.

The five-day event opened with a documentary film that sought to clarify capoeira as a rich art full of teachings, followed by open games, or "rodas," where practitioners entered the circle to display their combat skills. More than 170 students from all over the world--from the Americas to Europe and Russia--immersed themselves in the totality of capoeira through workshops and chats given by renowned special guests: Mestre Morcego (Brazil), Mestrando Cascão (Portugal), Professor Pelezinho (Luxembourg) and Professor Macaco Preto (Belgium).

"I was pleased to find a very well organized event, which showcased Professor Gordinho's professionalism and his high-quality team," said Mestre Morcego, Professor Gordinho's master who trained him for more than 20 years. "His diligence can be observed through the technical level of his students, and it fills ABADÁ-Capoeira organization with pride."

On October 13, ACA NYC students took the stage at The Riverside Theatre and performed a 3-part dance that they rehearsed for 7 months. Following the performance, a series of spectacular solo demonstrations took place, setting the stage for the main ceremony--Batizado and Troca de Cordas--where beginners and high-level students received their new cords and were asked to showcase their skills on stage.

"I returned to Brazil certain that our school is well represented and is in good hands in the USA because our representative is very well related to the capoeiristas in the USA. Brilliant event. Congratulations to Professor Gordinho and the team!" Mestre Morcego added.

"Thanks to my students, everything came out perfect and organized," said Professor Gordinho. "We also have tremendous support from our sponsors--El Barrio's Artspace, The Deep End, Berimbau Sao Bento, SPEAR Physical Therapy, Virgil Ocampo Photography--who made the whole event truly memorable. The event was marked by much learning, excitement and a climate of friendship and unity. I couldn't be more proud of my students, and I am thankful for the support from everyone in the ABADÁ-Capoeira community."
