All journeys begin with a single step. We are taking our first here, in the fight against food waste and hunger
There is two or three times more food right now, then is needed to feed the number of people in the world. Despite that abundance, almost 870 million suffer from hunger every day.
Today WassCooking launches on crowd-funding site Kickstarter. With it, we will join a slow-moving bandwagon in the fight against food waste.
We have no illusions of solving world hunger or reducing food waste 100% on our own.
But we do believe that we can help this movement along.
We want to build a network that does not resell food that is close to the expiration date, just so that someone can squeeze the last dime out of a product. And if they can sell it, they eventually throw it out.
According to WHO, an estimated 820 million people did not have enough to eat in 2018, up from 811 million in the previous year, which is the third year of increase in a row.
In theory we could eliminate all hunger from 50% of the food we waste or lose and reduce the CO2 footprint with the other 50%.
This starts with you and me, and everybody else:
Your local NGO.
They have been at the forefront in the fight against hunger and poverty for decades. And they do an amazing job. But – as the numbers indicate – it's a battle they are loosing. So they need all the help they can get.
Your local supermarket and grocery stor.
They have significant power to impact food waste. But still up to 50 percent is thrown out while still edible. Unfortunately, this food waste is due to consumers' often picky preferences. Stores toss "ugly" produce before it hits the shelves because they fear people won't buy something that's not shiny or perfectly shaped.
You and me (The comsumers).
We all throw away leftovers, often because we don't really know how to incorporate it into another deliciouse dish the next day. Or we see that the freezer is full again, but we can't really remember when what was put there, so we throw it out just to be safe.
We know that it is not that clear cut, but you get the idea that we believe it is time to join the bandwagon….
