Thiel College to host Community Medical Ethics Project event

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Oct. 16, 2019 - PRLog -- A medical ethicist from Columbus, Ohio, will speak about fairness and bias in healthcare at this year's Community Medical Ethics Project event to be held in Thiel College's Lutheran Heritage Room of the Howard Miller Student Center at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 24.

The event will explore fairness in public health and how bias influences the delivery of healthcare. The event is free and open to the public.

The speaker, Amy M. VanDyke, Ph.D., a system ethicist at the Mount Carmel Health System in Columbus, will explore the ethical framework that supports decision-making in public health care, and how bias forms and how it can influence systems of public health. VanDyke will also provide participants with tools to recognize and challenge personal or systemic bias in public health campaigns and initiatives.

VanDyke supervises all ethics activities in a Catholic health care system that includes hospitals, surgery centers and physicians' offices. She also teaches health care ethics at the Mount Carmel College of Nursing in Columbus and is part of the ethics faculty/speakers bureau for the Consortium Ethics Program of the University of Pittsburgh. She received a doctoral degree in healthcare ethics from Duquesne University.

Shuttle service will be provided between Thiel's (https://www.thiel.edu/) Passavant Center parking lot and the Howard Miller Center.

The Community Medical Ethics Project, based in Greenville, is sponsored by Thiel College, UPMC Horizon, St. Paul's Senior Living Community, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity. The presentation is approved for American Medical Association Physician's Recognition Award Category 1 credits and for nurses' continuing education units.
