He spent most of his young childhood on a sharecropper plantation ("Jesse Owens."). On the plantation, Jesse was expected to pick up to 100 pounds of cotton a day at age 7. He also struggled with chronic bronchial congestion and pneumonia. At the age of 9, the Owens family moved to Cleveland Ohio. During his middle school years, his physical education instructor noticed how fast Jesse was when he was running around the track. After high school, Owens decided that he would continue his academic and athletic journey at The Ohio State University.
