Overview of Flat Knitting Technology | Bharat Machinery Works

JOHANNESBURG - Sept. 4, 2019 - PRLog -- Flat knitting is a technique of creating knitted textiles. In this method, the alternating sides of the fabric are present towards the knitter. We can also attain the same result by knitting alternatively from left to right and then right to the left without turning the fabric. We call this process as back-and-forth technique, and it requires either inborn or learned motor skills to perform it.

A flat or V-bed knitting machine includes two flat needle-beds set in an upside-down "V" shape. The width of these needle beds can range up to 2.5 m. A carriage, also called by the name of cam-box or head is also present which moves backwards and forwards across the needle-beds. The primary function of this cam-box is to make the needles to selectively, knit, insert or transfer the stitches.

The knitted fabric produced by flat knitting method has two sides. One is the right side which faces outwards and away from the wearer's body but towards the viewer. The second one is the wrong side that faces inwards and towards the wearer's body but away from the viewer.

Flat knitting is dissimilar to the other technique of generating knitted garments, i.e. circular knitting in which we knit the fabric from the same side. Flat knitting is much more complicated than that of the circular knitting technology. It is because for creating the same stitch, two different movements take place. One motion occurs while performing the knitting from the right side and another while proceeding on the wrong side. Due to it, there can occur the formation of a knit stitch on the right side and purl stitch on the wrong side.
While performing the method of flat knitting, we have to turn the fabric usually after every row. However, in double knitting involving two types of yarns and double-pointed needles, we can rotate the material after every second row.

For carrying out the procedure of flat knitting, we can either utilize hands or single-bed or double bed flat knitting machines.

The speed of the flat knitting devices is relatively slower than that of the circular machines. We consider the knitting speed of about 0.5 m/s or even lower as the lowest pace of the flat knitting machines. We generally observe this rate in the hand type of flat machines.
