LOS ANGELES - Aug. 4, 2019 - PRLog -- Rhinoplasty (referred to as nose surgery or nose job) can be performed in two distinct ways.  The two approaches are Open and Closed.  In the open approach, an external incision is made as well as internal incisions to allow for greater exposure and much easier manipulation of cartilaginous structures.  It is particularly valuable in learning the rhinoplasty procedure as it is much easier to teach the principles.

      The closed approach to rhinoplasty uses internal incisions without the external incision.  The closed approach results in no visible scars.  In addition, as a result of less division of tissue, there is less postoperative swelling, and patients can return to work in about a week or so.  Thus, the patient looks more reasonable at a sooner date.

      There are several other advantages that make the closed approach more predictable.  The tip elevation and tip support is much more predictable when the tip supporting structures are not divided.  In an open approach, the tip supporting structures are divided.  In addition, the skin envelope is much more reliably redraped in the closed approach as the skin is not completely elevated off of the underlying cartilage
