Car Windshield Choices - OEM & Aftermarket Windshields

WAYNE, N.J. - June 10, 2019 - PRLog -- Replacing your windshield can seem like a daunting process. There are different types of glass your local glass replacement provider will be able to use.  OEM and Aftermarket are the terms for windshields you'll hear when calling for pricing and options.

OEM (Original Equipment Manufactured) windshields are fabricated by the same  companies that manufactured your original windshield. These will match the original windshields color, thickness, fit and shape. OEM windshields will also have matching logos to the original windshield. In essence, you should be getting the benefit of getting an almost identical windshield to what your vehicle came with when it rolled off the assembly line.

Sounds like OEM is your best bet, right? It may be but keep in mind OEM glass may need to be ordered through your dealer and can take longer to have delivered. It is also often more expensive and may not be approved by insurance if filing a claim.  Also be aware that if you are leasing your vehicle, your lease agreement may specifically state that a replacement windshield must be OEM.

So what is your other option? Purchasing an Aftermarket windshield would be an alternative choice. These windshields are manufactured by glass companies that create copies of the original.  The fit and shape of the aftermarket windshields will undoubtedly be the same. However, the new windshield may vary in thickness, durability or tint color and UV protection. Typically, aftermarket glass is the least expensive windshield of the options available.

Both of these choices have their pros and cons. All auto glass manufacturers have to pass government standards so from a safety perspective, OEM and aftermarket are quite comparable. The main distinction between the two will be the quality and price.
