OXFORD, U.K. - Nov. 1, 2018 - PRLog -- Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Hon. Patricia Scotland QC, became the 3rd successive Secretary-General of the Commonwealth to lecture at the University of Oxford's OXCIS.  Rt Hon. Scotland made it abundantly clear that in the commonwealth,  'consensus is more powerful than voting' in achieving the necessary international change and development. In his contribution, world renowned consultant to monarchs, governments and presidents, Professor Chris Imafidon, raised the important issue of gender inequality. Scotland QC responded and outlined the steps Commonwealth has taken to assist member states to increase gender equality using the Toolkit. This assists nations with practical steps to bring about desirable change, but also hinted in event of no funds readily available, there is a need to adopt a resourceful strategy.

In the hour long lecture, Rt Hon Patricia Scotland QC highlighted the uniqueness and unparalleled advantage of the commonwealth, in terms of diversity, tolerance and an appreciation of equality among member states. However, she stressed the underlying principle behind the commonwealth's success: namely the governance of 53 different nations via the adoption of unanimous collective decisions as opposed to the internal voting found in other global organizations such as the UN or EU.

Secretary-General, the Rt Hon. Patricia Scotland QC also explained the breadth of sizes of countries that make up the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth consists of people of diverse faiths and religions. She highlighted the need for sustainability targets and key elements of faith such as love, compassion and altruism.

Dr Farhan Nizami CBE, Fellow at Madagalen College, Oxford, hosted the event, while the principal of Somerville College, Oxford, Baroness Janet Royall of Blaisdon, gave the vote of thanks and underlined what an inspiration the current Commonwealth Secretary-General is to the whole world. Prof Imafidon, Chair of the Board of ExcellenceinEducation.org.uk (an alliance of innercity charities) expressed his delight at the commonwealth's approach to eliminating poverty and its commitment to education for all.

According to seasoned lawyer and former judge, Baroness Scotland, "The Commonwealth represents citizens of many faiths and none. Our approach to global challenges therefore offers valuable insights into finding consensus and building on what is shared"
