The Indian musical instruments form a major section of music making all forms of music. In the course of long history, Indian has evolved a wide variety of musical instruments classified under four heads, Stringed, Wind, Percussion and instruments.

ILFORD, U.K. - Oct. 23, 2018 - PRLog -- Tabla is one such instrument which falls under the category of membrane percussion instrument which originated in 18th century. It takes it name from the table of Arabic origin. The tabla is the most commonly played drum set in North Indian music. Its primary function is to maintain the metric cycle in which the compositions are set. It has been a particularly important instrument in Hindustani classical instrument and comes in a pair. Tabla is mainly used in making music for traditional, classical, popular and folk music. The paired drums consists of one higher-pitch tabla which is played with right hand and the other deep kettledrum is played with left hand. The right drum is made out of wood and have the profile of two truncated cones bulging at the centre. It is about 25cm in height and 15cm across. Skin tension for the right handed tabla is maintained by thong lacings and wooden dowels that are trapped with a hammer in retuning. It is also called as "Daya" meaning right.

The "Baya" meaning left tabla is 25 cm in height and 20cm across. It is usually made out of clay or wood or copper with a hoop and thong lacings to maintain the skin tension. Pressure from the heel of the player's hand changes the tone colour and picture. A disk of black tuning paste placed on the skin of each drum affects the pitch and also generated overtones characters of the drums' sound. The tabla is played the best when the player is seated but can be played when standing as well. Sound or music is produced on the tabla through a variety of different fingers and hand strokes. Each drum stroke can be expressed by corresponding syllable, used for both teaching and performance purposes.
