Mother-Daughter Team Launches Home Helpers of East Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. - Oct. 1, 2018 - PRLog -- When Ursella Slusher realized she was her mom's last hope to launch her own caregiving business, Slusher quit her high-profile aerospace job and moved to Tampa to become her mom's business partner. Now Slusher and her mom, Juanita Garbutt, are excited to announce the launch of their new business, Home Helpers of East Tampa.

She asked me to help her research franchise options but, when it came time to move forward, she didn't have the support she needed to make it happen. When I realized this might be her last chance to fulfill a life-long dream and that I needed to be in Tampa to help make it happen, I quit my job and made the move. It was hard, but I wanted to make this happen for my mom and I love that this new path gives me the opportunity to help people in a new way," Slusher said. Home Helpers of East Tampa offers free in-home consultations and works with each client to create a flexible, affordable care plan based on a person's individual needs. Slusher and Garbutt have soft launched the business by offering companion care services, like meal preparation, laundry, light housekeeping, transportation and companionship. In the Spring, they'll start offering additional services like personal care, grooming, bathing, ambulation, medication management, care management and respite care.

Slusher and Garbutt are co-owners of the business and Garbutt is the company president. Garbutt, who trained and earned her certification from Berkley East Hospital, spent the majority of her career in in-home care and really saw her calling as a caregiver when her mom developed dementia.

"When my mom developed dementia in her later years and needed care and assistance for her day to day personal hygiene, food preparation, and doctor appointments, the critical need of in-home care came full circle for me. I felt fortunate that my years of experience prepared me to manage the challenges that this illness brought and it helped me understand that not everyone has the ability to provide the care or assistance themselves for their love ones through illness or the natural aging process. I love that, as caregivers, we can make a positive impact on those individuals and families," Garbutt said.

Slusher is handling most of the business operations and marketing. Although it was bittersweet for Slusher to leave her job managing international aerospace programs, she's found that Home Helpers speaks to her on a new level.

"I'm a car and planes girl, but before that, I'm a people girl. I love serving people. I tie shoes. I serve water. I clear tables. I do whatever needs to be done to help people, even in seemingly small ways. Being part of Home Helpers has become very special for me – I'm getting to live my own spiritual calling by serving others," Slusher said.
