POM demand patterns are dramatically different between various regions and countries. In the areas with mature economies, demand growth for POM is expected to fall well below global averages primarily due to the geographic shift of many manufacturing industries (such as the automotive and electrical & electronics industry) to areas of lower labor costs such as China and India. Historically the average utilization rates from 2005 to 2016 have been over 70% which witnessed a decline in 2009 following onset of global economic recessionary trend. The decline in POM demand has affected the operating rates worldwide, and utilization is likely to fall further to 68% during 2017-2018 with recovery in utilization starting post 2018. The primary driver for the growth in demand of POM in Asia has been the migration of labor intensive downstream conversion industries from developed high labor cost regions like North America and Western Europe, apart from burgeoning population growth and increasing living standards, both of which are driving growth in domestic demand for consumer products also. The strong growth in Automotive, electrical & electronic and Consumer appliances is likely to push the demand growth. Polyacetal (POM) also known as polyoxymethylene, exhibits good low temperature impact resistance, high dimensional stability, favorable frictional properties, low water absorption, good mechanical strength and abrasion resistance. Commercially polyacetals are available in two grades; Homopolymer (POM-H) and Copolymer (POM-C). Copolymers offer better chemical properties whereas homopolymers have better physical properties. Globally the POM market is witnessing growth on account of increasing applications and growing demand in Asia-Pacific and other developing regions. POM is gradually replacing other engineering plastics in variety of applications. It serves end-use industries such as Automotive, Electrical & Electronics, Industrial, Consumer & Home Appliances, Food Contact, Medical Devices, Sporting Goods and Others. Most of the POM resin manufacturers are in Japan, South Korea, China, United States, Germany, Taiwan whereas Malaysia, Thailand, and Netherlands have the presence of at least one player each. This strategy report describes the global POM market, with focus on major countries and their subsequent demand for different applications.
