Spring Lake Heights, NJ, August 10, 2018 – Dr. John A. Schmidt, Jr. is among the first physicians in Monmouth County to implement state-of-the art technology to safely and securely prescribe controlled substances for his patients. He implemented an Electronic Prescriptions of Controlled Substances (EPCS) system to ensure that pharmacies receive the correct prescriptions in a timely manner. Patients benefit from having an electronic record detailing each medication Dr. Schmidt prescribes in their Electric Medical Record (EMR). This eliminates the need for patients to physically pick up a "blue pad" hand written prescription from Dr. Schmidt's office and then bring it to the pharmacy to be filled, saving time and ensuring nothing is missed due to human error.

"It is so important to have a complete and accurate list of all medications in a patient's file," explains Dr. Schmidt. "This is the only way we can protect patients from harmful interactions between medicines that should not be taken together which is especially important when a patient is taking controlled substances. Our EPCS system automatically records the prescription in a patient's EMR."

Dr. Schmidt, a board-certified internist, received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He interned and completed his residency in internal medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Schmidt then studied for five years at the National Institutes of Health, first as an officer in the Public Health Service working in the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases; and then as a fellow of the Arthritis Foundation in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
