When it comes to Independence Day celebrations, or it's more popular name, Fourth of July, there's usually an image of a grill, a picnic, fireworks and loved ones surrounding you. Ideally, it's on a carefree weekend, but this year, the fourth of July has landed not just on any weekday, but right in the middle of the week. This Wednesday date has caused predictions of a decrease in consumer spending this holiday.

According to a survey done by the National Retail Federation (NRF), over 216 million Americans (87 percent) plan to observe Independence Day and are expected to spend $6.9 billion on food, down from last year's record of $7.1 billion, as fewer people said they would turn out for the Wednesday holiday.

Last year, 219 million Americans, or 88 percent, participated in celebrating Independence Day.

However, the annual survey, which the NRA began in 2003, still had the second-highest amount in the history of the survey.
