Muslims for Progressive Values Condemns SCOTUS Travel Ban Decision

LOS ANGELES - June 27, 2018 - PRLog -- Muslims for Progressive Values (MPV) unequivocally condemns the Supreme Court's recent decision to uphold   President Trump's travel ban as a defeat to American ideals of inclusion and religious freedom. In the case of Trump v. Hawaii, the Court ruled that President Trump's travel ban does not violate the principles of religious neutrality set forth in the First Amendment. MPV, however, with this ruling disagrees and aligns itself with the dissent statement of Justices Sotomayor and Ginsbeg who articulate how Trump's travel ban disguises xenophobia and islamophobia as national security policy. If this were truly about national security, the U.S. Government would work with Muslim communities, not alienate them, as this has been proven to be one of the most effective ways to counter extremism. Instead, this decision contributes to the continued villainization and isolation of innocent immigrants, refugees and Muslims, based on hateful rhetoric and fallacies spread by the Trump administration and the alt-right.

With eleven years of experience in countering violent extremism, MPV firmly believes that the travel ban is counterproductive to America's national security interests because it conflates the problem of extremism with Islam. MPV strongly urges the American government to refer to historical precedent and recognize the historical, oppressive patterns this administration is repeating. This ban is a notable step in a dark direction and one that is absolutely unaligned to core American values and beliefs of inclusion, diversity and religious freedoms.

MPV will continue to stand for human rights and dignity for all. MPV will continue to loudly advocate for these civil and human rights, demand that our political representatives uphold constitutional religious liberties, and hold this administration accountable for the fear, hate and chaos it has produced with it's bigoted legislation.
