Whose The Real Culprit For Period Cramp? Prostaglandins!

What is prostaglandin? Prostaglandins are a natural chemical in the body with a hormone-like quality that promoting and resolving inflammation. It does not produce by the female hormone instead only be produced in the area where they are needed ONLY.

June 27, 2018 - PRLog -- Basically, what prostaglandins role in your menstruation cycle is it will trigger muscles in your uterus to contract. Too much of it can cause severe period cramp and heavy period bleeding.

So, the one that contributes to your period pain all this while is prostaglandins.

Are you still confused on how prostaglandins can be the real culprit for your menstruation issue?

Fret not because now I will explain to you one by one on how your period cycle work and I bet once you've finished reading this article, you will have a clearer picture of why I made this claim.

In every period cycle, your body will produce two female hormone which is:

i)  Progesterone: Mimics pregnancy such as increase your appetite and slow down digestion as a way to absorb more nutrient, in case you got pregnant.

ii) Estrogen: Prepare the uterus by building the uterine lining wall. So, your egg can lies in the uterine wall in case you get pregnant.

If there is no fertilized egg, it will stick to the uterine lining wall that is built by the estrogen and it will be shed in the process known as menstruation.

In order to remove the lining wall, your reproductive system will produce a natural chemical which is prostaglandins to help your muscle in the uterus area to contract.

If you have a healthy period cycle, you will less likely to feel any pain during this time and if you do, it is supposed to be mild.

The reason why you feel period cramp is because of hormonal imbalance which your body produces less or too much of either estrogen or progesterone. When these two hormone is not balanced, your prostaglandins level will also be affected.

What are the things that cause your hormone to be imbalanced?

Some of the common causes are :

Extreme exercise: It is said that to menstruate, a woman must have at least 22% body fat. Women who exercise excessively often have a lower percentage of body fat and can, therefore, interrupt the hormonal balance. As a result, women may have irregular periods.

Menarche – just had your first period or menopause: When you just had your period, your body needs some time to settle down and adapt to the new environment. Eventually, your period will be on track over time. On the other hand, menopause will also experience what menarche feels except over the time, there will be no more period.

Stress: When you are stress, your body will produce a hormone called cortisol and what cortisol did is it will blocks progesterone production and use it to produce more cortisol. It does not only affect your period cycle but also make it difficult to conceive as progesterone function is to prepare the body for pregnancy.

Medication such as birth control: The reason why you take birth control is that you are not planning to get pregnant. When you are taking birth control, estrogen and progesterone production will be interrupted as these two hormones serve the purpose to prepare your body for pregnancy. You are most likely to feel cramping sensation first few months after you take birth control medication.

Is there a way to treat menstrual cramps?

Sure there is a way. Reduce salt intake, do a gentle exercise, take mefenamic acid pills a day or two before periods and most importantly, stop drinking alcohol and stop smoking. Excess alcohol consumption can increase estrogen levels and if that happens, you will have an irregular period cycle besides the pain last longer.
