You Can Avoid TSS By Wearing A Sanitary Pad?

Almost every tampon users know that they can get infected with Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) if they do not change or remove their tampon after more than eight hours. If many are aware, why are there still many cases related to TSS?

BALTIMORE - Aug. 3, 2018 - PRLog -- What many people do not know is that TSS can spread in many ways and not necessarily because you did not change your tampon frequently.

In January 2017, Phoebe Bambury, 19, was diagnosed with TSS. She was a careful individual. She strictly followed the safety instructions on the tampon box to change it frequently and she did not even sleep with a tampon in.

At that time, she was already aware of what TSS is as well as the symptoms. One day, she felt something was off about her body and she decided to go to the hospital immediately to get herself checked. Just like she thought, she was confirmed by the doctors to be diagnosed with TSS and she was very fortunate to be able to get early treatment.

In an article she wrote about her journey in recovering from TSS, Bambury said, although she has recovered, she was never as healthy as she was before. There were days when she will feel really fatigued.

For the record, once you are diagnosed with TSS, you can never fully recover. A similar incident happened back in 2012 to model, Lauren Wasser, 24. Unlike Phoebe Bambury, Wasser wasn't as fortunate after a tampon left her in a coma due to TSS. She woke up with gangrene in her right leg, and extensive damage to her left. Initially, only the right was amputated.

Fast forward to January 2018, Wasser recently revealed that she would likely have her left leg amputated as well. In an interview with People, Wasser elaborated on the second amputation, explaining that it will help her live and move without that constant pain.

"When I see ads for tampons, it's always a woman running on the beach or swimming in the ocean. I haven't been able to do any of those things in five years. So much of my life has been taken because of this," she told People. "It's a hard decision, but my only way to freedom."

Today, tampon use is linked to less than half of TSS cases , according to NIH, and the disease is very rare overall. The Cleveland Clinic reports that the incidence of period-related TSS is roughly one case per 100,000 menstruating women. Still, Wasser's story is a powerful reminder that when TSS happens, it's serious.

These two stories might make you feel like tossing every tampon you own into the nearest trash can, and that makes sense — losing limbs is a painful and frightening prospect. But are there any other options besides tampons?

The best solution already exists. It is sanitary pads. Worried about period leaks? It is highly likely that you could've chosen one that is not suited for you. Choosing the best sanitary pad that suits you is crucial to your experience. So how do you know which pad is the best? Knowing these 3 steps will help you pick the most suitable pads for you.

Know Your Period Flow

If you have heavy period bleeding, usually a tampon would be the best solution for you because you don't have to change it frequently. However, you fully expose yourself to the risks of TSS.

The better solution is to wear the right size according to your period flow. If you have heavy period bleeding, consider using night sanitary pads. If not, pick the regular size. As simple as that.

Additionally, if you suffer from discharge or spotting before periods, use panty liners instead.

Keep in mind that panty liners can only be used to absorb discharge or spotting only, not period blood. You will still need to wear either regular or night size sanitary pads during menstruation.

Pick Super Absorbent Sanitary Pads

Super absorbent pads are amazing. Using highly absorbent pads will buy you more time before needing to change to new ones. However, this does not mean you can leave it on for more than four hours. You will still need to change it every four hours (at least) to prevent period leaks and also for hygienic purposes. While super absorbency is great for pads, it is not so for tampons. Avoid tampon brands that promote super absorbency as that only contribute to a higher risk of getting TSS.

Never Assume All Sanitary Pads Are The Same

You may think that all sanitary pads are the same. From what I hear, many girls tend to say that there will be period leaks everytime they use sanitary pads. Which is why most prefer to use tampons over a sanitary pads.

We'll let you in on a little secret. Not every company produces pads the same way and quality. The main reason why 100% cotton sanitary pads exists is that their target audience are more environmental-friendly with regular period flow. If your flow is heavy, Super absorbent pads are a must. 100% cotton sanitary pads will not work.

One example of super absorbent pads are Hersday. Hersday Super Absorbent pads are designed specially for women who suffer from heavy period bleeding. In fact, it absorbs better than any other pad currently available in the market today.
