POWER UP Urges Natural Disaster Agencies to Plan in Advance for Hurricane-related Power Outages
Premium charging technology company partners with Epicenter Media and Training to enable emergency management organizations to prepare for 2018 Atlantic hurricane season

Ryan Doak, co-founder, POWER UP, said, "When disaster strikes, it is too late to devise a rollout plan to ensure those without power can stay connected during a time of crisis. With no plan in place, evacuation centers are left implementing potentially unsafe solutions, such as chaining power strips together, for evacuees to power their devices. We recommend that agencies and relief organizations plan now for the worst and have safe, reliable charging equipment on site prior to a hurricane making landfall."
POWER UP's technology was first used for disaster relief when Houston, Texas flooded in 2015 and again during Hurricane Irma in 2017. The charging technology company has since built a fleet of solar-powered charging trailers among other charging station technology to be used as a relief effort in the event of natural disasters. To further aide in disaster relief following the devastating 2017 hurricane season, the company has opened three distribution centers along the East Coast in New York City; Baltimore, Maryland; and Orlando, Florida.
With the 2018 hurricane season forecasted to generate 10 to 16 named storms, delayed planning can leave organizations scrambling to find the resources needed to support their communities. However, due to the significant amount of lead time prior to a hurricane making landfall, organizations have the benefit of preplanning and the ability to stage resources, either per incident or seasonally.
To ensure safe charging, POWER UP recommends organizations:
· Employ multiple power sources (i.e. power grid, generator and/or solar power)
· Use charging technology that is UL certified to prevent shock
· Provide multiple options for charging (i.e. USB, outlet, cable)
· Have the ability to charge a wide range of devices (i.e. phones, tablets, laptops, wheel chairs)
· Plan to distribute charging options equitably throughout a jurisdiction.
