Students Invest in their Futures by Virtual Learning through "The Stock Market Game"
The game is an online simulation of the global capital markets where students in fourth through twelfth grades learn real-world financial skills by engaging in virtual investing. AJHS has 10 teams competing in the Capitol Hill version of the game. The top 10 teams in the nation will go to Washington, D.C. in June. The last trading date is May 11th and the top teams will be determined after that date.
One AJHS team of three students is often ranked in one of the top 10 positions, however the rankings change daily. More than 3,000 teams are competing in the U.S. If the AJHS team makes it to the top 10 they will travel to Washington, D.C. in June to attend "The Stock Market Game" presentations, as well as meet with their Congressman, Paul Gosar, U.S. House Representative for Arizona's 4th District.
"This team has been a real contender for the whole game," said Mr. Hutzell. "It's pretty exciting to see the students not just competing at this level but to have a good shot at being a top 10 winner."
The class project was more than just a fun and engaging experience. According to a report by the U.S. Securities and Exchange commission, students who learn how to save and invest have more opportunity to achieve financial goals that range from purchasing a car to paying for college tuition or funding ongoing career training. It is also a good training ground for more adult financial visionary goals such as saving money to make a down payment on a house, having funds for emergencies, providing money for periods of unemployment, as well as saving for retirement.
