PRLog -- These young ladies truly inspire me. Many were coy and a bit shy when asked what schools they had already been accepted to, some have heard from their safety and match schools, but most were anticipating hearing from their reach schools and the Ivy Leagues in the next few weeks. It is a well-known superstition among the graduating Seniors at Tech not to speak out loud about their dream schools as they might jinx the process and not be accepted. Just to put it in perspective Cornell was a safe school for some and a reach school for others. State schools were a given and most had multiple acceptances to fine New York State institutions. Anticipation and concern was a common thread in my conversations with these young ladies as their shared joy and fear will be realized in a few weeks. Many will receive prestigious invitations to Ivy League American Universities with partial or full scholarships, but their collective fear comes in that they will have to decline due to their families being unable to absorb the ancillary costs of boarding, books and travelling home for much celebrated family traditions. While there is nothing wrong with attending a CUNY or a State School. Perhaps if the future employers of these gifted students could find a way to partner with not only Brooklyn Technical High School students but all high Schools at this juncture, we could get these young ladies to their reach and dream schools thereby freeing up space at CUNY's and State institutions for the next level of achievers. Eight out of the past 10 Valedictorians of Tech were female, 200 languages other than English are spoken at home and 63% of our 6000 students qualify for free lunch being at or below the poverty level.
