From Quill Awards to Confronting 'Fake News': Adelphi Hosts Annual Press Day on February 28

 
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Feb. 22, 2018 - PRLog -- Adelphi University will host its annual Press Day (http://events.adelphi.edu/au_event/press-day-2018/) Wednesday, February 28, when distinguished journalists, editors and teachers will come together with high school and college journalists to confront the "fake news" controversy and other issues facing contemporary journalists.  It is expected that 290 students and 34 faculty members from 27 schools in Nassau, Suffolk, and Queens will participate (see list of schools below).

Presenters this year include:

Rebecca Baker, president of the Society of Professional Journalists and a contributing editor at Newsmavens.com. Formerly deputy head of news for the New York Daily News, Baker also was managing editor and later deputy editor-in-chief at the New York Law Journal.. She earned an MS in Journalism at Quinnipiac University, where she graduated magna cum laude.

Liza N. Burby, an award-winning journalist, editor and founding publisher of Long Island Parent magazine. A former editor-in-chief at Anton Media Group, Burby is currently working as a project-based manager on editorial content for organizations including Bonnier Corp and Stony Brook University. She is also an Adelphi senior adjunct faculty member and advisor for The Delphian student newspaper.

Brian Cogan, an associate professor of communications at Molloy College in Rockville Centre.. He is the author, co-author, and co-editor of numerous books, articles, and anthologies on popular culture, music, and the media including Greenwood's Encyclopedia of Punk Music and Culture, Encyclopedia of Politics, the Media, and Popular Culture, and Everything I Ever Needed to Know About ______* I learned from Monty Python.

Salvatore J. Fallica, an adjunct faculty member at Adelphi and an assistant professor at New York University. He teaches courses in propaganda, spectacle and celebrity culture and communication theory and is a frequent contributor about national politics on various radio and international news shows. Fallica has published work on Bob Dylan, Norman Mailer and political advertising.

Mark Grabowski, a lawyer and an associate professor of journalism at Adelphi . He writes a column on politics for the Washington Examiner, has published papers in Harvard's and Stanford's law journals, and has given a TEDx talk in Shanghai.

A highlight of the day will be the Quill Awards Presentation. The popular awards recognize students for their work in journalism in 15 categories: Best Photograph, Best Illustration or Cartoon, Best Layout, Best One-Page Layout, Best Sports Story or Column, Best Arts Review, Best Opinion Piece, Best Editorial, Best Feature Article, Best News Article, Best Online Newspaper, Best Online Writing, Best Freelance Work, Most Outstanding Reporter and Most Outstanding Newspaper.
