BURBANK, Calif. - Nov. 13, 2017 - PRLog -- Placing corporate social responsibility within the broad context of moral philosophy, Joan Marques (https://www.amazon.com/Joan-Marques/e/B001JOXVI4/ref=dp_byline_cont_ebooks_2), Ph.D., Ed.D., Dean of the School of Business at Woodbury University (http://woodbury.edu/) and Professor of Management, has published Ethical Leadership: Progress with a Moral Compass (Routledge, 2017), the university announced today.  Dr. Marques is also the author of Business and Buddhism, published by Routledge in 2015, and Leadership, published by Routledge in 2016.

Ethical Leadership introduces readers to the moral dilemmas associated with business decisions, considering the global community's increasing awareness of how choices affect human life, non-human life, and the environment when contrasted with its tendency to overrule morality for profit, growth, and innovation.  Helping students to understand the moral and ethical considerations leaders face in the workplace, the text provides a framework for balancing business demands with doing the right thing.

Dr. Marques walks readers through the basics of Western moral philosophy before the 20th Century and beyond it, covering utilitarianism, universalism, the golden rule, and virtue ethics, as well as compelling Eastern moral philosophy, to help readers link individual behavior to the larger scheme of corporate social responsibility.  The text combines this with a survey of various leadership theories—including servant leadership, awakened leadership, authentic leadership, and spiritual leadership—to present a model that combines the strengths of each theory.  The book explores the mind-sets behind moral pitfalls, along with their potentially disastrous effects, and examines how these can be overcome.

Chapter summaries and relevant cases, including studies on Fidel Castro, Wells Fargo, Mylan's EpiPen price gouging, and more, aim to help students place theories in context, analyzing how to successfully, compassionately, and ethically achieve success in business ventures.   With an easy-to-grasp, three-part progression, and reflective questions for both chapters and cases, Ethical Leadership seeks to benefit students of leadership and business ethics.

"This book couldn't be more timely," said Ian I. Mitroff, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, University of Southern California. "Indeed, it's always timely given the moral transgressions in business today."  Added Frederick T. Evers, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, University of Guelph, Canada, "in the midst of moral challenges, from the highest echelons to the lowest ranks, Ethical Leadership presents a clear and much needed pathway toward morally conscious behavior in personal and professional leadership.  The cases in each chapter serve as important eye-openers."

Dr. Marques earned an MBA from Woodbury and an educational doctorate (Ed.D.) in Organizational Leadership from Pepperdine University.  In addition to degrees from Woodbury and Pepperdine, she has a Ph.D. in Social Sciences from the University of Tilburg in the Netherlands and a B.S. in Business Economics from MOC, Suriname.  She also holds an AACSB Bridge to Business Post Doctoral Certificate from Tulane University's Freeman School of Business.  Dr. Marques is cofounder of The Business Renaissance Institute, president and cofounder of the Academy of Spirituality and Professional Excellence, and a member of the Academy of Management, the Organizational Behavior Teaching Society and the Phi Delta Kappa National Honor Society.

Swiftly transitioning from student to teacher, Dr. Marques has served as an academic advisor at Woodbury since 1999 and an adjunct faculty member since 2001, eventually becoming Director and Chair of the BBA Program and Chair of the Management Department, where she is a full professor.  Her teaching focuses on leadership, ethics, and organizational behavior, and her research interests pertain to the same areas with specific focus on workplace spirituality, mindfulness and leadership.

Dr. Marques is the author or co-author of more than 20 books on management and leadership topics, including most recently Leadership: Finding Balance Between Ambition and Acceptance (Routledge, 2016); Leadership Today: Practices for Personal and Professional Performance and Spirituality and Sustainability: New Horizons and Exemplary Approaches (Springer, 2016), both with School of Business colleague Dr. Satinder Dhiman; Business and Buddhism (Routledge, 2015), in which Buddhism is approached as a leadership psychology, and Leadership and Mindful Behavior Action, Wakefulness (Palgrave-McMillan, 2014), in which she provides directives to leaders to adopt a wakeful mindset and abstain from the sleepwalking mode.  She is also the author of Courage in the Twenty-First Century (2013) and The Awakened Leader (2007), and co-author of, among others, Leading Spiritually (2014), Business Administration Education (2012), Laughter is the Best Teacher (2011), Stories to Tell Your OB Students (2011), From Me to We (2011), Managing in the 21st Century (2011), The Workplace and Spirituality (2009), and Spirituality in the Workplace (2007).
