By: Mellooi Creations Sdn Bhd The Interiors collection coincides with the designer's re-branding exercise and hence surprises with many fresh directions, while simultaneously staying true to Melinda's signature style.Centerpiece of the collection are imaginative prints, some of which are taken from Melinda's very own abstract art paintings, brought to life with cutting-edge technology. Melinda Looi's digital printing partner Epson, has been infusing their latest digital textile printing technology and expertise, creating luxe prints found in over 20 creations. Besides abstract paintings, carpets too play their role in the collection. They have been developed into prints akin to classic scarf prints produced by the world's leading luxury houses. And they have also been used to play with silhouettes, by extending pieces of fabric from garment flounces or creating handkerchief skirts and backs. "This season, fabrics are a vivid mix of textures, patterns and colours," says Melinda Looi. "Imagine a plush chaise longue with a throw casually draped over it. I took this to create the idea of fabric embroidery which you can see in our pleated jackets where we stitched metallic stripes over pleated grey wool suiting, as well as in our combo dresses," she adds. Other signature pieces are looser fit-to-flare A-line silhouettes, hidden slits and full skirts that fall just below the knee, as well as a playful spin on the corset, which is built-in to some dresses and shirt dresses. When asked about the 'The Interiors' theme and the custom-made furniture pieces made for her fashion show by renowned furniture label Caccina, the never resting designer said with a smile: "Who knows maybe one day I will have my own furniture collection." Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week 2017 Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week was chosen as a launch pad for Melinda Looi's collection and it's stage was literally set to the designer's 'The Interiors' theme with custom-made arm chairs and sofa's adoring the runway, some of them raw and unfinished, while others were upholstered in the designer's latest print designs. Guests included top local celebrities, media, top clienteles, fashionistas and Melinda Looi fans, no chair was left empty, as expected at a Melinda Looi fashion show. Invitees at this year's much-awaited fashion show were not only the first to preview the The Interiors collection but were furthermore treated to custom-made Melinda Looi diaries by IPC Gifts, popcorn flavoured macaroons by Elevete and partied the night away at the designer's After Party at ACME BAR & COFFEE, which saw the guests sipping on specially created cocktails inspired by the designer's collection. ABOUT MELINDA LOOI Melinda Looi's talents earned her a scholarship at the La Salle School of Fashion in Montreal, Canada, where she honed her craft. It was her graduation collection in 1995 that captured the public imagination, and earned her the Malaysia Young Designer Award 1995 in Kuala Lumpur. Since then, there has been no looking back. Melinda's creative spirit has been recognised through local and international awards, foremost of which is the prestigious Designer of the Year Award at the Malaysian International Fashion Awards 2004 and 2006, and once again in 2009 at the Mercedes Benz STYLO Fashion Awards.
