Follow on Google News | Wakfefield Business Set to Improve Water QualityEbsford Environmental has been appointed as remediation specialists to work with the Coal Authority and Environment Agency on a project to improve up to 60km of rivers in the North Pennines
By: Chew PR During a four-week period, Ebsford will deploy specialist equipment to safely remove hundreds of tonnes of sediment that has collected behind a series of sediment traps in the River Nent, at Nenthead, Cumbria. The traps were installed by Cumbria County Council around 20 years ago. Removing the sediment will help to improve the water quality in the Rivers Nent and South Tyne for local wildlife and minimise downstream movement of sediment to the Tyne estuary. The environmental impact of this government project, which is jointly funded by Defra and the North East Local Enterprise Partnership's Local Growth Fund, has been carefully considered. To minimise adverse effects from the works, and rapid changes in water levels due to flash floods, Ebsford will temporarily dam and over-pump two stretches of the river to reduce the risk of sediment being washed downstream during removal. Adam Rolfe, director at Ebsford Environmental Ltd says: "It is always a privilege to be asked to work with organisations that are focussed on achieving the best results possible whilst aiming to achieve a wider strategic objective that we all can benefit from in the future. "From our point of view it's also particularly exciting when we get the opportunity to do some 'out-side the box' thinking. We're a specialist contractor and really like tackling sites with complex access and environmental constraints. But we're also a team of engineers, environmental and construction specialists with decades of combined experience who love looking into alternative options that might achieve greater sustainability for everyone in the long run." Minimising the impact of works on the land surrounding the site, lightweight and low-impact long reach excavators and tracked dumpers will be used. Also as part of the clean-up operation offsite disposal will be minimised through the recovery and cleaning of stone for reuse in the landscape. Cheryl Donohoe, Project Manager for the Coal Authority, said that the work was vital in removing heavy metals from the River Nent, which is the second worst river in the country for metal mine pollution. She added: "The checkweirs or sediment traps capture sediments in rivers by creating deeper pools, which slow the river flow. We are now working with our specialist contractors, Ebsford and JN Bentley, to carefully remove the sediment in a complex operation without causing any issues or environmental problems." Rob Culledge, Senior project manager - construction at JN Bentley said: "Working with experts such as Ebsford Environmental is our priority in achieving the successful and safe removal of sediment contaminated by metals from historic lead mining." Ebsford Environmental specialises in the specification and implementation of leading edge, bespoke environmental and ecological remediation solutions both on land and in water. http://www.ebsford.co.uk ENDS End
