Text Based Horror: The Tech Academy Live Project

PORTLAND, Ore. - Feb. 6, 2017 - PRLog -- Part of what sets our curriculum apart from many other coding boot camps is our Live Project course. Live Projects are real world software development projects, projects from local non-profits, small businesses, and the like, where students utilize the skills that they've learned at The Tech Academy into working on a project they can put on a resume.

Since the course is self-paced, and doesn't follow a traditional set schedule as most schools, we often have multiple projects going on at once. If you find yourself in the Live Project section of the course room, you'll see students and Instructors engaging in daily stand-ups, debugging, and collaborating.

I spoke to one of our students, Sean Henry, who is currently working on the "Text Based Horror" game that students have created and are currently developing. "Text Based Horror", which was originally written in Python and has since been converted into Javascript, is a running project that is maintained by students. "Text Based Horror" is just what it sounds like – a horror-themed, text based game. And it's awesome.

The structure of a Live Project is very simple. As students complete the preceding course, they are assigned to one of our running live projects. One of our Instructors, in this case Aja Broferrio, then acts as a Project Manager. With the students, they'll discuss what changes and improvements need to be made, what can be done throughout the course of the "sprint", etc.

Students on Live Projects work both front end and back end, and their unique skills and experience often give them a unique upper hand when tackling specific problems. For example, Sean Henry who improved functionality of the website and encrypted the URL, also rewrote all the prose for the game! Jeremy, a student who was working with Sean throughout the Live Project, also happens to be an audio engineer. So in addition to back end improvements, Jeremy also cataloged all the sounds in the game, ensured they functioned properly, and created new sounds where he saw fit.

This is just one small example of the benefit of the Live Projects. Students not only come away with experience on their resume, but they also get a taste of what it's like to work as a software developer. In addition to the skills students like Sean and Jeremy learn at the Tech Academy, students also take their past skills and experience, and see how they can be incorporated and benefit them as developers.

The Tech Academy is a coding boot-camp where students study computer programming and web development. The curriculum is available both locally in Portland, Oregon or remotely online. Students learn many programming languages and skills, including: computer science fundamentals, HTML, CSS, Version/Source Control, Visual Studio, Databases, SQL, JavaScript, Python, C#, ASP.NET, Project Management and more. What sets The Tech Academy apart from other code schools is our open enrollment, self-paced program and employment rate.
