Follow on Google News | Whitefish Credit Union to Add New Online Security FeaturesMontana's largest credit union will soon adopt two-factor authentication for Online Banking.
By: Whitefish Credit Union The new features will keep members' accounts more secure by using two-factor authentication anytime a member performs a 'high-risk' action through Online Banking, such as registering or changing account information. The Credit Union's IT personnel expect to begin implementing the changes as early as December 2016, said Steve Haugen, Whitefish Credit Union's chief information officer. "Instead of having security questions to verify a user's identity, we're going to begin sending members a one-time passcode they can use to access their Online Banking accounts," said Haugen. "The code can be received through a voice call, email or text, and will last as long as the user is performing similar actions on the site. "Using a username and password along with a unique piece of information, like a passcode sent directly to the member, makes it much harder for potential fraudsters to gain access to a member's personal data or account. However, members still need to secure their account information, email accounts and phone by using strong and unique passwords. We recommend that members never reuse passwords." Whitefish Credit Union began using a similar security feature earlier this year for unlocking members' accounts after too many failed logins or other suspicious activity. Their self-service unlock feature uses the same passcode methods to allow members to manage their online account passwords 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
