TransActive Gender Center Post-Election Response

PORTLAND, Ore. - Nov. 9, 2016 - PRLog -- The election of Donald Trump as President of the United States and Mike Pence as Vice-President is a watershed event in the history of this nation. For many Americans it is a stark repudiation of our Constitution and the forward progress of our nation in areas related to human and civil rights. For others, it is a first step in "taking their country back" through unspecified methods from a wide assortment of racial, ethnic, religious, sexual and gender minorities.

In the view of the international community, this election crystallizes and justifies questions and concerns that have long existed about the myth of "American Exceptionalism" and the durability of our stature around the world as a beacon of human rights and freedom.

For TransActive Gender Center, the events of recent days will only serve intensify our focus on protecting gender diverse and transgender children, youth and their families in every oppressed, underserved and marginalized community. There will be no parsing, carving out or capitulation to pressure from those who feel that some may need to be 'temporarily' left behind in order for others to move forward.

We will work to help those dealing with irrational fear of gender diversity understand that we are your family, friends, neighbors, and first responders. We will continue to assist schools in understanding that opening your hearts, educational opportunities and equal access to students of every gender experience benefits all students.

For those who are experiencing the election results as both a personal rejection of their very humanity and as a potential threat to their safety and security, know that you are not alone in those feelings.

Togther we will prevail - not just for ourselves and our children and families, but for all the children and families trapped by far-right extremist lifestyles and ideologies. They need us to do this work more than they may ever know.

Join TransActive Gender Center and other advocates, activists and allies in this challenge in whatever way you can...because we can't do it alone. The time for waiting in the wings is over.
