Follow on Google News | School Districts Seek Ban on Transgender BookThe children's book "George" is being banned in Oregon school districts.
A Change.org petition in opposition to book banning in Oregon The children's book "George" by Alex Gino tells the story of a transgender girl and her struggle to get those around her to listen and understand her need to live in her own truth. It is beloved by many children and their families. Oregon school districts and individual schools considering a ban include Hermiston, Tigard/Tualatin, Bend-LaPine and Lake Oswego Rivergrove Elementary School. TransActive Gender Center, a leading national provider of education, empowerment, services and resources to families of gender diverse and transgender children and youth has created a petition (see link below) in opposition to these attempts at book banning. It states, in part that: "We, the undersigned, call on the Oregon School Boards Association and every school district in the State of Oregon to reject any ban on "George" and other books that provide visibility and support for gender diverse children, adolescents and teens." https://www.change.org/ Book banning is not an "American" or "Family" value...and the banning of books about gender diverse children who are already stigmatized and marginalized by society is something we as a parents, caregivers and allies of children should refuse to tolerate. Please consider signing our petition by clicking on the link above, and supporting this effort in whatever way you can. End
