Scott Hanselman's Tech Academy Tech Talk In Review

PORTLAND, Ore. - Nov. 8, 2016 - PRLog -- Last Friday, The Tech Academy was lucky enough to host Scott Hanselman at our weekly Tech Talk. Hanselman, currently working with Microsoft, is known for his programming experience, his writing (two .NET books, one relationship book, and one highly recommended blog (http://www.hanselman.com/blog/)), and podcasting (three very different tech related podcasts).

Hanselman's reputation for above average speaking abilities precedes him, and he did not disappoint. From the very beginning he captured the audience with his candor, humor, and talk of his open source artificial pancreas system for his Diabetes.

After gauging the depth of knowledge of the crowd, or checking "how far down the call stack" they were, he began with the basics. His talk began with one of many pearls of wisdom for the future programmers in the form of a car engine analogy:

Don't be someone who turns the car on, and thinks 'Magic!'. Rotates the wheels, 'Magic!' We don't have to be a mechanic, but you should speak the mechanics language.

Gearing the talk into a more technical direction, Hanselman explained .NET, the subject of his Tech Talk, as the speckle over the top of an unmanaged environment of high and low level APIs, creating a nice, clean surface area that you can talk to, making everything friendly.

He further explained .NET, giving context and history, and discussed the differences between .NET framework, .NET core, and Xamarin, as well as the underlying framework. He brought each point home by putting it into a real world context, with his usual candor and wit.

Following suit of the entire Tech Talk, Scott Hanselman ended his talk with the perfect analogy comparing ASP.NET to varying degrees of steak preparation. In one of our best Tech Talks, the audience walked away more knowledgeable, amused, and with a little more insight into the field they are about to enter.
