| Lennie Rosenbluth to Attend Charlotte (NC) Tribute EventStar of '57 Tar Heel National Champions Still Holds Record for Most Points in a UNC Season
By: Lennie Rosenbluth Tribute Event - Charlotte, NC Lennie Rosenbluth was the Michael Jordan of his era at UNC...he was so good that he still holds the record for most points scored in a single Tar Heel season. And, this was before the three point shot. This Bronx, NY native, now 83, was the star of the electrifying 1957 UNC Tar Heel team that went undefeated and won a heart-stopping triple overtime game to beat Kansas and Wilt Chamberlain for the national championship. Lennie is now one of five surviving members of this team. His wife, Dianne, attended Myers Park High School and he is coming to Charlotte in support of the Lady Mustangs women's basketball team. In the 1950s, legendary UNC Coach Frank McGuire knew New York and heavily recruited that area throughout his career. The result was that the 1957 team featured a starting five of New Yorkers-turned- Until that time, the men's basketball program at UNC was not on a high level. Likewise, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) was also not considered among the nation's strongest. Following that famous NCAA national basketball championship, the first one ever televised in NC, UNC basketball and the ACC took off. The Tar Heel program was never the same, becoming one of the nation's perennial powerhouses. Lennie Rosenbluth was the star of that team and was named by the Helms Foundation as the best college basketball player of that year. Food at the fundraiser will be catered by Leroy Fox at Sugar Creek Brewery with some craft beer included. There will be Tar Heel sports celebrities in attendance and Lennie will share fascinating memories and stories for 30-45 minutes. Former Tar Heel basketball players, including former Charlotte mayor Richard Vinroot and David Chadwick, are slated to attend.
