MIAMI - Aug. 18, 2016 - PRLog -- On July 20, the FDA stated that it had approved generic versions of the very popular cholesterol-lowering pill Crestor, rejecting alast-stance attempt by AstraZeneca to stop less expensive competition from gaining access to pharmacy shelves.

This approval must extensively diminish the cost of the drug and result in a sharp reduction of market share for AstraZeneca. AstraZeneca's Crestor retails for approximately $260 a month.  With the onset of generic options now being introduced  into the market, the price could ultimately drop as much as 80 to 90 percentage.

In a petition to  and lawsuit against the FDA, AstraZeneca expressed it's opinion that the government cannot legally approve any generics of Crestor, since the drug had just granted Crestor approval for use by children affected by rare diseases.

AstraZeneca argued that the drug was in that way protected from competitors, even for use in the treatment of adult hypercholesterolemia, as per the Orphan Drug Act, which promotes the development of rare disease drugs.

Of course these arguments have been chastised by the FDA and others, as an outright abuse of the Orphan Drug Act, together with through the F.D.A. Itself.
