Eating disorders
are actually serious and often fatal illnesses that cause severe disturbances to a person's eating behaviors. Obsessions with food, body weight, and shape may also signal an eating disorder.

The most common eating disorders include binge eating disorder where someone will eat a huge amount in a short period of time, anorexia nervosa when people eat very little, causing a low body weight; and bulimia where someone eats a large portion of food, then purges themselves of the food.   Some others are pica, when sufferers of the disorder eat non-food items, rumination disorder, when food is regurgitated and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder where people have a lack of interest in food.  Three are a host of other eating disorders as well. Some common traits among people with eating disorders are anxiety disorders, depression, and substance abuse.  For those in the New York City area, psychologist NYC Judith Zackson PhD is an expert in all things related to eating disorders. http://www.drjudithzackson.com

The cause(s) of eating disorders is not always clear. Biological, societal and environmental factors seem to affect the onset and severity of eating disorders.  For example, cultural pressure to be thin may contribute. A case in point, eating disorders affect about twelve percent of dancers. Those that have suffered sexual abuse may be more likely to manifest eating disorders. Some eating disorders, such as pica and rumination tend to happen more often in people with cerebral disabilities.

Treatment can be effective for many eating disorders. This normally involves counselling and a healthy eating plan.  Depending on the specific disorder diagnosed, a normal amount of exercise, and a decrease of efforts to eliminate food may be part of the treatment. If the disorder and accompanying disability is severe, hospitalization may be necessary.  Treatment with medications may be used to help with some of the attendant symptoms.  Both anorexia and bulimia increase the risk of death.  Psychologist NYC Judith Zackson PhD can help with both of these eating disorders.

If you would like help with some form of disordered eating that is limiting your ability to enjoy life, help is available.  Dr. Judith Zackson's personal experience with eating disorders gives her a unique understanding of what it is like to struggle with this issue.  She knows that recovery is possible.  Find out more about Dr. Zackson and eating disorders on her website.   http://www.drjudithzackson.com
