BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - May 23, 2016 - PRLog -- After recently raising $30,000 at the 6th annual Race for Daraja, on June 5, 2016 writer and activist Deborah Santana will host the "Daraja Girls: Powerful Beyond Measure" Film Screening at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills. As the Daraja Academy celebrates this release, it is important to understand the value of this organization. Daraja, meaning "bridge" in Swahili, serves as a bridge between who the young ladies are when they become students and who they become after the program. The academy provides supplies, uniforms and most importantly 4-year academic scholarships for the ladies. Within the past 8 years, the Daraja Academy has sponsored 224 girls and given away $2,240,000 in scholarship funds towards their education. This program believes in elevating young women and encouraging them to become leaders in society. The "Daraja Girls: Powerful Beyond Measure" Film Screening will occur in order to educate people about the program and continue to provide funding for these students.

The afternoon will consist of performances, live art and various interviews between students and the media about the program and the film. As this is a family event, there will be a live acoustic performance by Deborah Santana's son Salvador Santana (Grammy Award Winning Musician/ Composer/ Humanitarian) and Devon Werkheiser (Actor, Musician, Nickelodeon's hit TV series "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide"). There will also be art provided by one of the most accomplished and prolific street artists in Los Angeles, Teachr. Lastly, a live interview will take place between Viva Bianca (STARZ Original series Spartacus, Writer, Co-Founder of #FashionFeminista at SheRa Mag) and Daraja Academy graduate Esther. Considering the entertainment, those involved and those who support the organization, there is a high expectation for the night and film.

As event goers will see, the film begins with the young ladies leaving their homes to attend the boarding school. With over 100 young girls that applied, the Daraja Academy has accepted 26 students into their freshman class. The academy is a secondary school for bright young girls, who due to their families' circumstances would not be able to continue their education. These young ladies, who would normally be married off, are given a chance to see life beyond poverty and achieve their dreams. The ladies work with various volunteers from all over the globe, including the U.S., Europe and Australia. In addition to scholarly advice, with the volunteers' help, the ladies are accountable for the role they play at Daraja, maintain open communication, embrace differences, and leave each day better than they found it.
