| Local Boiler Company Fires Up Tug of War Club for their Royal AppointmentBy: Thames Valley Tug of War Thames Valley has been invited to pull in a Tug of War exhibition match as part of Her Majesty's celebrations, which take place next month in Windsor. The five day event will see Thames Valley compete against local rivals Sandhurst in front of Senior Royals, with the Queen herself attending on Sunday 15th May. Understandably, the pullers want to look their best, which is why the Drayton brothers - Steve, Gary and Andy - stepped in to help. Steve Drayton said, "I've known Simon Mitchinson - the head coach - for a long time. He is so passionate about tug of war and has so much pride in his Club, that my brothers [Gary and Andy] and I thought it would be nice gift to buy new shirts for all the pullers so that they can really put on a good show for the Queen." Tug of War shirts are made with a particularly grippy material and specialist padding. Since there are only a dozen or so top class teams and even fewer manufacturers in the country, the cost of a shirt is very high, which is why Thames Valley is so grateful to Drayton Boiler Services. Mel Spill, the Thames Valley Chairman, said, "It is such an honour to be invited to perform for Her Majesty the Queen. We are all delighted and excited about the 90th Birthday celebrations, even more so now that we will be able to present ourselves in immaculate new kit. We can't thank the Draytons enough for their generosity." Recently the Club has competed in white shirts, but for the exhibition matches they are reverting back to their old colours. Spill explained, "after a few lean years, where our membership was too low to compete on the National circuit, we have just started to gain momentum in bringing in new pullers. I thought it would be nice to go back to our original colours of Gold shirts with Red and Royal Blue hoops, to show how we are going back to our roots." This is perhaps a modest description of his squad, which now boasts several former England internationals, a current England U23, an elite-level coach and one of the World's brightest teenage prospects. The 90th Birthday celebrations start on the 12th May, and will be a significant chapter in the history of Thames Valley. http://www.thamesvalleytugofwar.co.uk Notes to editors: • Thames Valley Tug of War Club provides competitive and friendly Tug of War at all levels for all those who want to participate.
