Georgia U.S. Senate Candidate Allen Buckley Comments on Clarkston Mayor's Position on Marijuana

ATLANTA - April 11, 2016 - PRLog -- Allen Buckley, the Libertarian Party of Georgia's U.S. Senate candidate for 2016, has commented on the marijuana legalization proposal of Clarkston Democratic mayor, Ted Terry.

Mr. Buckley said:  "It's time for our state to recognize the efforts of people like Mr. Terry to help end the failed war on drugs."

Buckley also said: "Our country is broke, and tough choices should be made now. We should end the war on drugs and all the costs it creates, including the burdens on the legal system and the immigration system.  The Economist magazine stated in 2009 that eliminating the war on drugs and concentrating on education and rehabilitation is the best 'all things considered' option.   It said in its Leaders section in the March 7th-13th 2009 edition:  'In fact the war on drugs has been a disaster, creating failed states in the developing world even as addiction has flourished in the rich world.  By any sensible measure, the 100 year struggle has been illiberal, murderous and pointless.  That is why The Economist continues to believe that the least bad policy is to legalise drugs.  . . .  This newspaper first argued for legalization 20 years ago.  Reviewing the evidence again, prohibition seems even more harmful, especially for the poor and weak of the world.  . . . Our solution is a messy one; but a century of manifest failure argues for trying it.'."

Mr. Buckley was previously a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2004 and 2008.  In 2008, Mr. Buckley garnered 128,002 votes in the General Election, forcing a run-off between Saxby Chambliss and Jim Martin.
