| Teacher of Special Needs Children Seeking SupportBy: GoogleNewsSubmit "My kids make me smile each and every day. There is little better than the smile of a 1st grader who masters a new skill or make a new connection. I love it," said Mahan. Mahan teaches students with varying ability levels, and most of her students receive special education services. Of those who receive services, a large number of them are on the autism spectrum. "Many think children on the autism spectrum cannot learn. This is not the case. They need different activities, and most importantly, they need help with sensory processing. Many children with autism spectrum disorders do struggle with sensory processing," Mahan's students need tactile items that can help them regulate their sensory processing. Children with autism spectrum disorders need regular breaks from their "normal" learning, and anything tactile is perfect for these students. Mahan has turned to Donor's Choose (http://www.donorschoose.org/ "These students I teach cannot handle many normal situations most people take for granted. Crowds, noises and even certain things they touch sends them into sensory overload. This often leads to inappropriate behaviors. My project helps curb this," said Mahan. Mahan has a full list of her intentions. 100 percent of the funds raised will go to the children and classroom, and at the end of the day, the children are all that matter to Mahan.
