KAMLOOPS, British Columbia - Dec. 3, 2015 - PRLog -- The City of Kamloops, British Columbia has ambitious plans for increasing the collection and processing of recyclables as part of its overall waste management strategy. Emterra Environmental has been a key partner since 2007, and has been re-selected and awarded and extended contract to process and market recyclables collected through the City’s curbside recycling collection program through 2020.

The City anticipates the amount of recyclables collected will double by 2020. Emterra operates material recovery facilities (MRFs) across Canada and is an industry leader when it comes to diverting waste from landfill and “turning waste into resources”. Recyclables processed find life as Emterra’s unique expertise extends to finding markets where recyclables they can be utilized as new product inputs.

“Emterra is pleased to have been selected by the City of Kamloops through its competitive bidding process,’’ said Ed Walsh, Emterra’s VP of Operations. “This award is testament to the quality and level of service that our employees provide the citizens of this great city.”

“It also recognizes Emterra’s steadfast commitment to growing recycling in the community and increasing the amount of waste being diverted from local landfills.”

Marty Gibbons, president of the United Steelworkers Local 1-417, noted “We are extremely pleased with the City of Kamloops’ decision to continue with Emterra for processing recyclable materials. This means local jobs will stay in Kamloops.”

With an annual 15,000 tonnes of recyclables expected to be collected in the final year of the contract, Emterra’s (http://www.emterra.ca/) capabilities for diverting waste from landfill will contribute strongly to achieving a sustainable local environment. The partnership will help the City of Kamloops achieve its target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent by 2020.

“The residents of Kamloops are keen recyclers,” Walsh said, “and we intend to work alongside the city and residents to reach and exceed recycling goals.” Strong public-private partnerships with municipal partners across Canada, such as the City of Kamloops, brings Emterra one step closer to its vision of an environment of “zero waste”.
