EU Removes Standards from the General Product Safety Directive

The EU has recently withdrawn a number of standards from the General Product Safety Directive (GPSD).

HONG KONG, China - Sept. 23, 2015 - PRLog -- The General Product Safety Directive 2001/95/EC (GPSD) is an important piece of legislation in demonstrating presumption of conformity for certain product categories where there is no specific European regulation (1).

Latest Updates to General Product Safety Directive

In January 2015, the EU published Commission Communication 2015/C 014/03 harmonizing a wide range of standards for demonstration of compliance with the GPSD (2).

On 31 July 2015, the European Union published Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2015/1320 announcing the withdrawal of certain standards from the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) for presumption of conformity with the General Product Safety Directive 2001/95/EC (GPSD) (3). These standards are:

- EN 12586:1999 and EN 12586:1999/AC:2002 ‘Soother Holders’
- EN 1400 Parts 1-3: 2002 ‘Soothers’
- EN 13138-2:2002 ‘Buoyancy aids for swimming instructions’
- EN 1860-1:2003 ‘Barbecues’’

Although this Decision has not indicated the replacement standards, one can assume that the latest version of these standards would be accepted for presumption of conformity with the GPSD for those hazards covered by the standard.

The Commission Implementing Decision entered into force on 20 August, 2015. Highlights of the Implementing Decision regarding consumer and juvenile products are summarized in Table 1 in the latest Safeguards bulletin (http://www.sgs.com/en/Our-Company/News-and-Media-Center/N...).
