Follow on Google News | Are You Moving Forward or Getting Left BehindDo Women in Leadership positions or at work measure their progress?
By Abha Banerjee Women are born multi-taskers, which has many benefits. However, one key to moving up the corporate ladder is focus, and sometimes women’s ability to ‘do it all’ can get the women executive sidetracked. It’s important to learn to keep your focus on your forward vision. Being part of the conversation is vital, so be bold, keep your focus and get ready to open the door to the next level in your career. One way you can do that is to bring others alongside you. By learning to delegate you empower those around you. When you make relationships and network with others in your field you strengthen your connections. When you encourage diversity of leadership and hire diverse thinking, approach and experience in your staff, you will ensure a strong, connected approach that can reach a wider audience. If everyone has something unique to contribute, the likelihood that any gender or cultural perspective is left out is decreased. As an added benefit, a diverse staff sets the groundwork for a diverse group of people to grow up in an organization and really have an impact as leaders. Go beyond thinking about gender or culture and think about diversity of experience as well. Make the team around you people that can fill in the gaps and bring new and interesting perspectives. If everyone on your team grew up in the same small town, went to the same school, graduated the same year, and had the same work experiences it wouldn’t matter if the group were from India, Ireland, or Iowa – the thinking would be hampered by the lack of diversity. While it may be difficult to get an invitation to the C-suite level meetings, wherever you are in your business life, be bold. In a recent Time article, Lean In contributor Jessica Bennet referred to a phenomenon of being “Manterrupted” It is not necessary to make every issue a gender issue, or an issue of being marginalized. If you make the topic of conversation “I’m not being heard” then that is what is on the table. If the topic at hand is a marketing strategy that you have strong ideas on, then rather than point out that you are being interrupted or left out, simply do as Albright suggests and raise your hand. Let the team know that you have something to contribute. Keep doing it, and the habit of the team will become making sure that you are included. Being part of the conversation and keeping connected with a diverse group of thinkers will help you move forward in your career. As you value the contributions of others, you’ll be empowered to give your own unique point of view.
