Follow on Google News | U.S. Senate Approves Resolution Establishing National Asbestos Awareness WeekThe American Board of Industrial Hygiene® (ABIH®) reminds workers and industry of the need to protect the public from hazards associated with asbestos exposure.
By: American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) National Asbestos Awareness Week helps to raise recognition of asbestos exposure risks both in the workplace and in homes. Many people in the United States are under the impression that asbestos has been banned, but this is not the case. Asbestos is banned in some products due to regulations such as the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), the Clean Air Act (CAA) and the Consumer Product Safety Act, but these do not universally ban asbestos. In addition, many older residential, commercial, industrial and institutional properties still have asbestos-containing materials that were installed in the past when it was used in numerous applications. “Prevention of asbestos exposure is key to the reduction of asbestos-related illnesses,” said Nicole Greeson, CIH® and Chair of ABIH®. “ABIH supports the efforts of National Asbestos Awareness Week and encourages the utilization of Certified Industrial Hygienists to quantify and manage exposure risks for workers and the public from this known carcinogen. CIHs are trained and experienced in air sampling, health risk analysis, hazard communication, community exposure, engineering controls & ventilation, and work environments.” To learn more about the American Board of Industrial Hygiene®, Certified Industrial Hygienist® credential or to locate a CIH® to perform industrial hygiene services, please visit www.ABIH.org, email abih@ABIH.org or call (517) 321-2638.
