KENT, Ohio - Feb. 25, 2015 - PRLog -- Kent State University’s College of Business Administration’s Associate Professor of Accounting Wendy Tietz, Ph.D., was named the recipient of the 2014 Bea Sanders/ AICPA Innovation in Teaching award. The award recognizes successful teaching practices in the first sequence of accounting.

Tietz’s entry “Accounting in the Headlines: A News Blog for the Introductory Accounting Classroom,” was centered around a website containing articles about companies and events that could be used in the classroom to show students financial and managerial accounting ideas.

Tietz and other award winners will present their curricula at the 2015 American Accounting Association meeting in Chicago. The theme of this year’s meeting is “Building Bridges to Our Future” and it will take place Aug. 8 through Aug. 12

“Dr. Tietz is a gifted educator who uses a variety of approaches to engage her students.  Her blog is a great illustration of her ability to bring the business world into her classroom,” said Linda Zucca, accounting department chair. “The use of stories about real companies and the issues that they face allows students to learn more about the application of the concepts learned in the classroom to the business world that they will face upon graduation.  The format of her blog also helps instructors find examples to use in the classroom quickly and efficiently since the stories are keyed to chapters found in most introductory accounting textbooks.”

Tietz is a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Management Accountant and a Certified Information Systems Auditor and has been a member of the College of Business Administration faculty since 2000. She teaches in a variety of formats including large sections, small sections and web-based sections. She received her Ph. D. from Kent State and both her MBA and BSA from The University of Akron.

Tietz is the co-author of Managerial Accounting, by Braun & Tietz, 4th edition, Pearson Publishing, 2015.
