“We had a successful 2014,” he stated. “Now we are adding people to our team in order to expand our capacity. With a larger group of marketing managers, we will be able to achieve everything we have planned for this year.”

He also discussed the qualities he and his colleagues are seeking. Although experience with promotions is preferred, it is not required. Brener explained that they look more for attitude and drive than skillset. “We can teach people how to promote brands,” he explained. “However, we can’t teach people how to care about their work.”

Brener continued by highlighting some of the practices Bay, Inc. employs to hire top talent. His biggest tip is to develop a talent strategy. Before making any hiring decisions, he encourages business leaders to determine what types of individuals would comprise the best teams. While finding all of the most outstanding candidates would be nice, it isn’t realistic. Furthermore, much like a sports team, chemistry and cohesion are as important as individual skill. Therefore, Brener asserts that is it necessary to have a comprehensive plan in place prior to initiating the hiring process.

“From there you can develop your job descriptions,” he continued. “This is an extremely important step. Many managers don’t invest the necessary time into writing effective job descriptions. They should include soft skills, performance expectations, and attitude descriptions as well as technical skill requirements.”

He also advocated taking the necessary time to find the right person. According to Brener, it is often better to wait to find someone who will really drive a team to a greater standard than to settle for someone subpar.

“Once you’ve got the basics down, it’s all about finding what works for your organization,” he concluded. “Be scientific about your hiring process. Document what you do and how you came to different decisions. Over time, you will learn from your mistakes and compound your successes. I believe that any manager who takes a deliberate approach to hiring will ultimately succeed.”
