By: City of Coral Gables Bringing together newly selected leading architecture and urban design firm Cooper, Robertson & Partners of New York -- along with property owners, merchants, residents, City, Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce and Business Improvement District of Coral Gables officials – the Steering Committee will seek input from stakeholders and community members to define direction on key components of the project. “I am looking forward to seeing the Streetscape project move forward,” said Wayne Eldred, owner and operator of Tarpon Bend Restaurant on Miracle Mile. “This project will be the catalyst for positive change for the Mile. It will help grow existing businesses and attract new businesses to a city that seeks success and growth.” The approximately $20 million project, which received the go-ahead from the City Commission last August, will, among other things, widen sidewalks, plant trees, create garden areas and add outdoor dining along newly landscaped curbs. The plan also calls for benches, kiosks, mid-block parks, intimate public spaces, and plazas for events and gatherings. “The Miracle Mile pedestrian experience hasn’t changed in decades,” said Mayor Jim Cason. “This project will help restore our main street to its status as a world-class destination.” Studies show that more walkable, aesthetically pleasing and amenity-rich places perform better economically and have higher shopper patronage. “I’m excited to see the project start and confident the Streetscape steering committee will represent the interests of our small businesses,” End
