The only real way for us to do so, however, is to assess how far we’ve come and to figure out exactly where we want to go. This is why it is so important for us to identify our objectives for 2015.”

Caleb indicated that the team is looking toward company growth and expansion in the coming months. He also wants to impact more people with the opportunity to advance into leadership positions. “Of course, we plan to increase customer reach for all of our clients, and to bring them even more business in the next year as well. After all, that’s what we’re all about,” he smiled.

“There is no shortage of techniques for goal setting,” Caleb continued. “Here at CitySide Distribution, we have a list of guidelines that we find particularly effective. For instance, we strive to make them as specific as possible. That means knowing exactly what we want to accomplish. Words like some or more are never used.”

According to Caleb, reasonable goals are also simple. He and his colleagues avoid using complex terminology and ideas to articulate their goals. Instead, their objectives are clear and focused. Furthermore, all intended outcomes are relevant to the company’s values and overall mission.

“We always ensure that the goals we set are measurable, too,” indicated Caleb. “It’s the only way to truly determine whether we are making progress. Matters such as profit and growth aren’t the only things that are measurable, either. We also pay close attention to things like team development and retention rates, for example.”

Caleb also explained that all of his team’s anticipated outcomes are written down. Research indicates that objectives are exponentially more likely to be attained if they are recorded this way. Everyone within the firm is fully aware of these expectations as well. This fosters a healthy level of transparency, as well as clarity of purpose. It also helps us hold one another accountable for our responsibilities.
