Follow on Google News | “LNG carrier market to register capital expenditure of $7.45 Bn in 2015” says Visiongain reportBy: Visiongain LNG carriers operate on transport routes around the world connecting the LNG supply chain. The main exporting regions of LNG are North America, Africa, Qatar and Australia, while the main importers are in East Asia (Japan, South Korea and China). Large-scale LNG carriers are currently constructed in three national markets using one of the three containment systems available. South Korea, Japan and China are the countries with shipyards currently producing large-scale LNG vessels. LNG is carried aboard vessels using containment systems that insulate the LNG. The oldest LNG carrying technology is the Moss-Rosenberg (commonly known as Moss) containment system. The second type of large-scale LNG carrying technology is the membrane technology: the GTT No.96, the T Mark-III and its upgrade Mark III Flex. At present there are seven shipbuilders involved in the production of these carriers while a range of companies are involved in their ownership and operation. The growth of the LNG market, and consequently the demand for LNG carriers, will greatly depend on China’s growing gas demand that will be partially satisfied by LNG imports. China’s policy is to construct domestically the carriers used to deliver this LNG. This will lead to increased market shares for Hudong Zonghua, the only Chinese shipbuilder currently producing LNG vessels, and the GTT No 96 technology, the only cargo system used by Hudong Zhonghua. The lead analyst of the report commented that, ‘At present, LNG carrying capacity is greater than liquefaction capacity, justifying the fall in charter rates in the last two years. The delayed liquefaction projects coming online in 2017-2019 will help balance these two variables. Additions to the carrier fleet after 2019 will be able to better anticipate and complement liquefaction capacity.’ The report includes 141 tables, charts, and graphs that analyse the market into the three national construction markets for LNG carriers, the three containment systems used on the vessels, plus small scale LNG carriers.
