Fast and Lean Steel Delivery Assisted by Radical New Crane System from Street

HIGH PEAK, U.K. - Nov. 21, 2014 - PRLog -- Improved order turnaround is promised by Tata at their Redcar Steel Service Centre following an investment in special cranes from Street Crane Company. Four overhead travelling cranes of 12 tonnes capacity – and a radically different design – will streamline material processing to speed of delivery of cut and finished steel for engineering and structural fabrication to Teeside customers.

Street Crane’s sales director, Chris Lindley-Smith, explained, “Given the high rates of material throughput and steel processing taking place, Redcar required a more innovative crane design. Conventionally cranes are orientated to run the length of the workshop, but the nature of the process meant three were many lateral movements in the bay and so a piggy-back crane design has been adopted. Four cranes of double bridge design are installed. Two linked beams span the 20 metre bays and on these is fitted a 27 metre double girder bridge, permitting north/south and east/west material flow in the working zones. This allows steel to be brought into the processing bay, with safe and efficient transfer through the shot blast and painting processes. The finished steel is then moved out of the bay and orders consolidated before shipping out to customers.”

The Tata network of 49 regional steel service centres provide access to the full range of steel stock that can be cut, processed and packaged to client requirements ready for their next stage of manufacture. For example, the plate and steel sections widely used by Teeside engineering, marine fabrications and structural steelwork contractors is cut, shot blasted and painted in a streamlined process before delivery to customers.

For flexibility twin six tonne hoists are installed on each crane. These can be controlled independently for smaller loads or used in tandem for heavier or awkwardly shaped loads to give additional stability. Magnet lifting from Walker Magnetics are installed on all hoists. For maximum safety cranes have been fitted with anti-collision systems with audible alarms and amber flashing lights to warn of crane approach. Twin floodlights on each crane are operated from the remote controller.

Hours of service metering on all crane motions will assist in planning proactive maintenance to maintain the plants uptime and efficiency. This makes a major contribution to ensuring maximum productivity.

To comply with Tata’s needs, push button infra-red link allows reliable crane control. Other key safety features include taut-wire safety lines to crane bridge platforms and ten safety harness anchor points at key locations such as panels, crabs and end carriages.
