Follow on Google News | Fall 2014 edition of Crime Lab Report delivered to 88 U.S. laboratoriesRape kits and forensic scientist compensation among the topics covered
In this most recent issue, Crime Lab Report takes on the controversial issue of rape kit testing (excerpt): ------------------------------------------------------------ Rape investigations aren’t solved by rape kits. They are solved with competent decision-making, professionalism, and effective communication. Rape kits are often a critical part of that equation. But not always. In recent years, we’ve witnessed an unprecedented tapping of the public treasury to pay for the testing of rape kits in cases sometimes dating back decades. The phenomenon is often driven by political grandstanding among advocates and elected officials whose motives vary, but are usually cloaked under a thick blanket of manufactured compassion. Right or wrong, testing yesterday’s rape kits comes at the expense of tomorrow’s victims by exhausting today’s resources. ------------------------------------------------------------ The current issue, which closes out the 8th year for Crime Lab Report, also showcases the success of a historic program at West Virginia University, known as FORESIGHT, which measures and monitors critical business metrics related to the operation of forensic science laboratories. Also, this issue’s HR Management in Forensic Science column recommends a way for forensic science laboratories to modify their career tracks to make them suitable for employees with both technical and managerial aspirations.
