The Constitution Is Alive and Well

Non-profit works to bring the Constitution to the forefront of American culture

CHULA VISTA, Calif. - Nov. 14, 2014 - PRLog -- 71 percent of Americans polled are unable to identify the Constitution as the "supreme law of the land."* Others can’t identify Independence Day on the calendar.*  A new non-profit based in Chula Vista is doing something about American civic illiteracy.  Not through education reform, seminars, or with a political agenda.  Rather, through marketing and advertising campaigns, starting with a month-long billboard campaign in Point Loma.

“As a military spouse, it devastated me that so many people seem to take the freedom we enjoy here for granted,” says Cristina McDonald, founder of The Freedom Revolution, “So I decided to do something about it.”  McDonald says the non-profit combines her education in political philosophy with her professional experience in marketing.

“I don’t blame anyone for their lack of constitutional knowledge.  No one has presented the Constitution to the public in a way that makes it appealing.”  says McDonald.  The mission of The Freedom Revolution is to market the U. S. Constitution to Americans.

McDonald points out that national voter turnout in last week’s midterm election was the lowest in recent history; and voting among young people remains low.**  “We hope The Freedom Revolution will not only increase civic literacy, but also civic engagement--especially with young people.  We want to make it fun,” says McDonald.

The Freedom Revolution’s inaugural billboard at the intersection of Lytton and Rosecrans in Point Loma reads “Government is the greatest reflection on human nature,” an excerpt from The Federalist Papers #51.  (The Federalist Papersare a series of essays promoting the ratification of the U.S. Constitution in 1787-1788).  The poster that went up on October 21 is intended to be a conversation starter.

A week before the billboard went up, McDonald and her team conducted a short, informal poll in Liberty Station as a way to measure the billboard’s impact.  They will conduct the same poll after the conclusion of the billboard campaign.  “We found other studies about how little Americans know about the Constitution, but we wanted to find out for ourselves.  Also, we’re hoping to see a change in responses before and after the billboard--especially since over 20 percent of the folks we polled thought the Federalist Papers were part of The Communist Manifesto,” says McDonald.  The Freedom Revolution’s poll results can be found on their website (http://www.thefreedomrevolution.org/survey-says/).

“The billboard is just the beginning.  We want to start discussions about freedom,” she says.  In conjunction with the billboard, The Freedom Revolution launched a weekly series of short youtube videos called “Revolutionary Roots.”  They break down seemingly-stuffy documents like The Federalist Papers into short, down-to-earth, (and often funny and entertaining) explanations.

There are various other ways to get involved with The Freedom Revolution.  “Revolutionary” apparel is available for sale on their website and can be seen on “Freedom Revolutionaries” participating in local athletic events.  In addition, The Freedom Revolution has partnered with a Napa wine company, Preamble Wines, that also seeks to promote the Constitution.  When the promo code FreedomRevo is used at checkout (PreambleWines.com), 10% of proceeds benefit The Freedom Revolution’s campaigns.  McDonald points out that wine makes a great Christmas gift and, she says jokingly, “patriotic wine tastes better.”

Future Freedom Revolution efforts include gamified Constitutional trivia, a “Freedom 5K,” “4th of July Fest in September,” robust social media campaigns, and a Constitutional awareness month.
